THE SUSTAINABLE HYPERSCALE DATA CENTER IN LATIN AMERICA
PIONEER IN 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY AND CARBON NEUTRALITY
ENABLING THE FUTURE IN LATIN AMERICA
Scala recognizes its historic mission: to support Latin America in the construction and operation of the necessary infrastructure for the evolution of countries to a new level of digitalization, in which access to knowledge, in its various forms, is extended to many, in which businesses can flourish in an agile and competitive manner, generating jobs and enabling the future to establish itself in the present.
Scala brings a new vision of responsibility and commitment to our customers, employees and society: scaling results for the construction of the digital future.
Whether the result is financial, marketing, personal or social, Scala works so that it is always bigger, growing and without limits towards a future that is established in the present.
ESG (ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE) OUR APPROACH
For Scala Data Centers, a company’s success must be measured not only by its financial results – but also defined by its commitment to the environment, its contributions to society and the strength of its governance, as well as its ethical behavior.
We reduced the environmental impact of our activities, carefully selecting our investments in sustainable projects, improving our operations and every day so that we can offer better solutions to our customers, while sharing benefits with our society.
ENVIRONMENT 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
In 2020 we procured renewable energy for all our facilities with coverage until 2028.
As a result, we became the first data center operator with 100% of our energy consumption coming from renewable and certified sources.
OUR JOURNEY TO CARBON NEUTRAL
In addition to operating with 100% renewable energy, still in 2020, we made important investments in our assets. With these improvements, SP1, one of the largest data centers in Latin America with more than 30MW in production, is now operating with a PUE of 1.5, well below the average for data centers in this region.
All of Scala’s new buildings are being constructed to operate with a PUE of less than 1.4.
In May 2021 we received the CarbonNeutral® certification. Issued by Natural Capital Partners, the leading experts in carbon neutrality with more than 20 years of existence and more than 300 global clients, this is the first certification granted to a Latin American company in the data center sector that already operates with 100% renewable energy.
The projects supported by Scala in addition to contributing to emissions reduction each year, also offer a number of other sustainable development benefits:
■ Portfolio of Acre Amazonian Rainforest REDD+, Brazil
■ Kitambar Renewable Biomass Fuel Switch, Brazil
PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY SCALA
Kitambar Renewable Biomass Fuel Switch, Brazil
Working with the Kitambar ceramics factory in northeastern Brazil, the project changed the fuel source for the kilns to renewable biomass at the unmanaged forest wood. The project changes the fuel source that supplies the furnaces, from native wood from the Caatinga biome to renewable biomasses, such as mesquite and cashew trees. This protects the 895 km2 Caatinga ecoregion from deforestation and reduces emissions by reducing the unsustainable harvest of native vegetation.
Portfolio of Acre Amazonian Rainforest REDD+, Brazil
It is a set of three projects located along the Purus, Juruá and Valparaíso rivers, in Acre. Their objective is to build sustainable economic livelihoods for local residents and, at the same time, prevent deforestation in 105,000 hectares of tropical forest. . The projects are helping to rehabilitate degraded areas along the banks of the rivers through reforestation activities, helping to combat erosion of the riverbed and the levels of polluting sediments in the water, while improving the overall protection of river basins by reducing deforestation.
SCALING WELLNESS TO THE WORLD
We know our relevance in the market, and we understand our role and our responsibility in helping to build a better world for people, whether they are employees, partners or society.
